Wide Brushed Band Ring with Oval Cabochon Ruby and Scrolls in 14k Yellow Gold

An oval ruby cabochon sits in a high-polished bezel at the middle of a wide, tapered band. A gold bead is applied at each corner of the bezel and a spiral scroll curls away on either side of it. The field of the band is brushed to a soft matte, while the bezel, the beads, the scrolls and the raised wire rails running along both edges are all left bright — so the whole design is drawn in polish on a matte ground rather than cut into the metal. 6.80 grams of 14k yellow gold, and wide enough that it covers most of the space between the knuckles.

A cabochon is polished, not cut. There are no facets on it, so nothing bounces light straight back at you the way a faceted stone does. What you get instead is colour with depth in it: light travels into the dome, moves through the body of the stone and comes back out slower, which is why a cabochon glows where a faceted stone flashes. It suits this mounting exactly. The matte field is what makes the polished beads and scrolls read as raised even though they stand barely proud of the surface — finish one band all in bright gold and the same design disappears into its own shine.
