The centre of this ring is a pear-shaped field of round brilliants, the larger stones toward the middle and the outline closing to a point at the top. Around all of it runs a full skirt of tapered baguettes, set on their sides and radiating outward, graduating in length as they travel so the pear shape holds and drawing in tight where they reach the point. Every stone is prong-set, and the skirt sits a step below the centre field so the two read as separate layers. Two carats total weight across the whole head, in 8.00 grams of 14k white gold.

A skirt like this is easy enough to build around a circle, where every baguette in a given ring is the same length and the job is repetition. A pear gives you no such luck. The outline changes curvature the whole way round — broad and slow at one end, tightening to a point at the other — so the baguettes have to change length continuously as they go, and at the point they stop radiating and start converging, which is the opposite instruction. Get one stone wrong along that run and the outline pinches or bulges where it should be smooth. Look along the edge and see whether it does.
