Wide Solid 14k Yellow Gold Band with Polished Open Nugget Design

No stones on this one at all — it is 8.30 grams of solid 14k yellow gold and nothing else. The face is covered in irregular nugget forms, each one polished bright, and they sit raised above a recessed ground that has been left coarse and unpolished. Some of the forms have open space between them, so you see through the face in places rather than across it. The outline is broken rather than clean: the forms run past where the edge of the band would be, so the silhouette has no straight line anywhere on it. Wide across the top, tapering into the shank.

The whole ring works on one contrast, and it is not a shape — it is finish. Bright polish sits directly against coarse unpolished gold, with no border or transition between them, so every form reads as a separate bright object and the ground behind them falls away into shadow. Polish the ground as well and the ring becomes an undifferentiated glare; texture the forms too and it becomes a lump. Doing only half the surface is the entire design decision. The broken outline is the other half of the trick, because a clean edge would have told your eye this was a band with decoration applied, whereas this reads as a piece of gold that happens to fit a finger.
