Large Oval Citrine Ring with Scalloped Brushed Gold Frame and Split Shank in 10k Yellow Gold

A large oval citrine, deep golden orange and even in colour from edge to edge, held by four double-claw prongs in this ring. Around it stands a scalloped frame of eight brushed gold sections, two across the top, two down each side and two across the bottom, each finished in fine parallel lines, with a small polished bead where the sections meet at either side. The stone is raised well above the frame on an open wire basket, so light reaches it from the sides. The shank is split into two slim polished bands. 7.90 grams of 10k yellow gold.

Everything around this stone is matte and everything in it is bright, and that is deliberate. The brushed finish on the frame kills reflections, so the eight sections read as one soft quiet shape rather than eight glinting ones, and the only hard points of light on the whole mounting are the two beads and the tips of the prongs. Set a big faceted stone inside something that quiet and it looks brighter than it would in a polished mount, for the same reason a photograph looks richer in a matte frame. Brushed gold also wears well: it hides the small scratches that show on a high polish. Hold it under a lamp and watch which part of the ring moves.
