22k 1/10oz American Gold Eagle Coin Ring in Polished 10k Yellow Gold

A one-tenth ounce American Gold Eagle is bezel set flush into the top of this ring, and the reverse faces up: an eagle dropping in to a nest where a second bird waits with two young. The legend runs around the rim — United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, In God We Trust, and along the bottom the specification struck into the coin itself, one tenth ounce fine gold, five dollars. The mount is plain and high polished with broad tapered shoulders, no engraving and no stones anywhere on it. The coin is 22k, the mount 10k, and the whole ring weighs 16.90 grams.

The flush bezel is the part worth understanding. On a coin, wear shows first at the rim and the high points of the relief, and it is the one kind of damage that cannot be polished out — take metal off a struck surface and the detail is gone for good. Setting the coin down inside a bezel that sits level with its edge means the mount takes every knock the ring ever receives and the coin takes none of them. That reverse design ran from 1986 to 2021, so a well-set example has spent decades protected rather than decades in a till.
