A round brilliant cocoa diamond sits at the centre under four prongs, warm brown against white gold. The halo around it is not one plain circle: cocoa diamonds run the top and bottom arcs, and two lobes of white diamonds loop across them at either side, so the two colours read as ribbons crossing rather than as a single frame. The shank carries that idea back down the finger — it splits into two rows of pavé that cross over each other, one row cocoa and one white, all the way to the shoulders. Brown diamonds were the throwaway end of the rough for most of the twentieth century, sorted out for industrial use, and the reason they are now cut for jewelry at all is that someone worked out they look better beside white diamonds than either does alone.
